HOW MUCH WILL I ACTUALLY EARN?
From RareJob, that is.
Upon opening the RareJob top page, you immediately see this quote:
Earn as much as P12,000-P17,000 monthly by teaching English to Japanese ONLINE!
That is possibly how much your salary will be, that is if you work a substantial amount of hours. In RareJob, you earn every 25 minutes as long as a student booked you in that particular slot. Most of the time, your student is online and you have to conduct a 25-minute lesson. But in some instances, he/she might be offline and TA-DA! You earn just by sitting and trying to reach him/her for 10 minutes. The point is you have to work longer hours if you would want to earn more.
Starting salary in RareJob is Php90/hr. So if you work for 5 hours in one night, that means you earn Php450/night, if all your classes are booked.
But what's good about RareJob is that you can increase your salary after working a particular number of hours (say, after 150 hours).
During my time, our starting salary was Php120/hr (Php600/night). After accumulating 150 hours of booked slots, it increased to Php140/hr (Php700/night). And then after another 150 hours, it became Php150/hr (Php750/night)--and that's pretty much the ceiling, I guess.
In RareJob, you earn what you work for. And it's good to plan ahead.
For example, for this month of January 2011, if you plan to work for 25 nights (for 5 hours) and your rate is Php90/hr...
rate time (hr) salary (/night) 90 x 5 = 450
salary (/night) no. of days you work TOTAL 450 x 25 Php11,250*
*subject to 2% withholding tax so your total will be Php11,025.
Not bad for this excludes 6 more hours of teaching during the weekends ;)
So if you plan you have a shopping spree next month, just work longer hours this month. Imagine earning that much in just your pajamas while lounging in your couch/bed.

WHY RAREJOB?
Yes, why exactly?
1. (Because seriously, this is the main reason why) You can earn A LOT - you only have to work for a maximum of 4 hours a weekday, so it's technically a part-time job, with a full-time pay. You can study/work during days and earn at nights. You even earn more than minimum wage (see: salary for more details), and if you stick out for a month or two, you can increase your salary propotionately (up until a certain ceiling, which is, high). And unlike any other jobs with ballooning tax, RareJob only imposes 2% withholding tax, which is Php2.00 for every Php100.00 you make. Salary is deposited every 10th of the month, and you can even avail cash advances.
2. It's convenient - because you can 'head home' to work, not 'go to your freaking far, people-infested workplace'. It psychs you up and entices you with all the comforts of your home: your bed, all the food, your own bathroom. Also, this adds up to no travel costs, go figure.
3. It's flexible - because you can modify your schedule two days in advance. Feeling lazy? You can open just an hour or two in your schedule. Have an examination coming up? You can close it entirely. Going on a trip? You can close an entire week of slots. Want to spend all your hard-earned money during pay day? Then go. Always remember, you have to plan in advance, which doesn't really hurt.
4. It's easy - because you just have to teach English. The specifics of being an online tutor in RareJob are as follows:
4.1 You can teach from 7:00PM to 12:00MN (Philippine Time) everyday, with a maximum of 4 hours. In addition, you can open yor schedule during weekends at 8:00AM-11:00AM. If you do the math, in one week, you can work for a maximum of 34 hours*.
4.2 Every class is held for 25 minutes. So you have 25 minutes to teach and 5 minutes to eat/drink/go to the bathroom/send IMs to friends/check Facebook. So if you open your schedule for 4 hours, you have 8 open slots, in which the students will try to book until 5 minutes before the class starts. There is a possibility that you will have 8 different students in one night. It can also be less if they're not booked or if you have a student who booked you for more than 1 slot (50, 75, 100 minutes).
4.3 Every lesson can be conducted in different ways and the only thing you need is a good command of the English language. You should be able to make a conversation going: no dead airs, no stammering, no unnecessary noise-making. Because ultimately, they need to learn something from you so they would want to be your regular student. And you won't certainly run out of things to say for there are guides and modules that will help you along the way (see: lesson activity for more details).
5. It's EASY and FLEXIBLE and CONVENIENT and COMPENSATES YOU VERY WELL. Need I say more? :)
*Effective starting January 14, 2010, the 4-hour lesson limit will be removed. Tutors can then teach for 5 hours from 7PM-12MN if they prefer to. So the maximum time of teaching in a week is 41 hours. Translation: more opportunity to earn money! ;)

HOW TO BECOME A RAREJOB TUTOR
If you want to:
1. Get money.
2. Get more money.
3. Feed your (insert any activity that's been maxing out your allowance lately) spree.
4. Sort of show your parents you're employed after graduating.
5. Sort of show your parents you're employed after umpteen years of job search.
6. Earn more money even though you already have a day-time job so yeah, back to item 1.
If your situation falls into at least one of those then here are the requirements:
[ ] UP STUDENT/GRADUATE - as long as you have that student number, you're in. And no, they're not open for outsiders. And I don't know when they'll be... or if ever they will be.
[ ] Must have a computer (and headphones)* - because it sucks when you don't.
[ ] Has an Internet Service Provider - preferably one that doesn't get disconnected when it's raining, during peak hours and/or BOTH.
[ ] Has Skype - you can get it for either windows or MAC.
[ ] A quiet room* - with doors and windows that can lock someone out due to their incessant prattle.
[ ] A comfy bed or couch (preferably bed) you can teach on.
Can you check all those requirements? Then you can go to RareJob and click APPLY NOW!
*Uh, yes, you can teach in an Internet shop. But it's kind of hard especially when you have to pee (and mark my words, YOU WOULD WANT TO).
